"Data rot" is a term and that captures a significant challenge for today's information resource managers. Essentially, it means that no matter what medium is selected for storage of digital data, that content probably will not exist in readable form some years later—unless it is continually copied over to ever newer media.
    The RIM question of the century, then, is:
    • how is your organization ensuring reliable access to information content for its defined retention period?
Assuming a migration strategy is in place, corporate records managers can turn attention to issues of how technology and business processes maintain authentic and reliable records as part of the corporate compliance and legal position.
